Profile
The appropriately grand, if not most up-to-date, Avery Fisher Hall hosts both illustrious gala tributes to the likes of Tito Puente, Diane Keaton, and Susan Sarandon and surreal musical mash-ups like the Yo-Yo Ma–Alison Krauss–James Taylor concert commemorated on the Appalachian Journey album. Despite the gaudy shade of gold coating everything from spotlights to trash cans in the high-ceilinged auditorium, the luster fades a bit when you look more closely at the industrial beige carpeting or the dinged-up armrests dating back to a mid-seventies renovation. Refurbished by Avery Fisher, the late founder of Fisher Radio, the boxlike hall possesses acoustics befitting the home of the famed Philharmonic, the Great Performer series, and the Lincoln Center and Mostly Mozart festivals. As for the building, its most impressive features are its exterior—with floor-to-ceiling windows and four-story columns—and a spacious outdoor balcony ideal for sipping an intermission beverage while peering down on Josie Robertson Plaza.
ToursGuided tours of Lincoln Center feature the New York State Theater, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Metropolitan Opera House. You can buy tickets on the concourse level of the Opera House, but it’s best to reserve your spot a day or two in advance since times change. Typically, tours leave daily between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. every two hours. Call the tour desk at 212-875-5350 for more information.
