Perry Rubenstein’s 23rd Street gallery opened in 2004 with a focus on performance art, and though it now emphasizes interdisciplinary art and mixed-media pieces, Rubenstein maintains this spirit today by inviting his artists to interact with the space, often creating site-specific installations. It’s a living gallery, so to speak, and artists both local and international have graffitied the interior and punched holes in the walls. Architecturally, the gallery is fairly unremarkable—save for a concrete beam in the center that artists often incorporate into their pieces. But this provides the perfect blank canvas: a square space with high white walls and adjustable lighting.
