Profile
A nonprofit arts anomaly amid high-end designer stores, Joyce Soho is housed on three floors of a former firehouse that was previously the Dia Arts Center. A little sister to Chelsea’s Joyce Theater, the Soho location presents separate productions from its uptown sibling but adheres to the same vision: to provide independent choreographers and dance groups with an affordable, subsidized rehearsal and performance space. The majority of programs presented during the season are self-produced by artists and small companies with styles ranging from modern to ballet to hip-hop. Occasionally, big names looking to experiment will also rent space within the organization’s two spacious studios or in its intimate, 74-seat white-box theater. A limited number of residencies are available each year.
