L&M, formerly C&M, specializes in modern art—particularly post-war American. Founded in the early '90s by former Goldman Sachs bigwig Robert Mnuchin, the space changed its name with the arrival of new partner Dominique Levy. Robert Pincus-Witten, art critic and one-time Artforum associate editor, consults on special projects. Look to L&M for exhibits that serve as intriguing footnotes to major artists' careers, such as the dramatic, final black paintings from Ab Ex master Franz Kline; the lyrical late-life collages of Joseph Cornell; or a selection of Andy Warhol's Liz Taylor, Marilyn and Jackie O. images. A standout show that worked particularly well in this intimate, crowd-free setting, juxtaposed Picasso's paintings of his mistress Dora Maar alongside a number of Willem de Kooning's women. Another score was the gallery's Jeff Koons mini mid-career retrospective, sealing the deal for the controversial artist and reminding many of his historical importance.
