Profile

The zippy yellow catamarans you see crisscrossing the East and Hudson rivers aren’t just about giving joyrides for tourists—they’re also transporting commuters to and from work. Founded in 2002, New York Water Taxi has continuously expanded its routes and increased its fleet while delivering spectacular views for a price that shames the car services. For out-of-towners, there are guided tours around Governor’s and Ellis Island, a summer Sunset Cruise at dusk, and a rowdy trip to Shea Stadium. Subway-weary workers can get picked up and dropped off at Hunter’s Point in Queens, Schaeffer Landing in Williamsburg, Fulton Ferry Landing, Red Hook, and Brooklyn Army Terminal on one side of the East River, and E. 34th St., South Street Seaport, Pier 11, and Battery Park on the other. (Additional stops on the Hudson include Piers 45, 66, and 84.) Whether riding for business or pleasure, riders sit safely (and dryly) on the vehicle’s lower level or take to the spray-lashed top deck for eye-popping views of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building; and the Financial District’s impressive skyline. On the Hop-on, Hop-off Tour, the taxi’s trek up the Hudson includes stops near the Museum of Jewish Heritage as well as a nod to the spot where the Titanic was scheduled to dock. Though that boat never arrived, yours assuredly will.

Tours

New York Water Taxi offers a number of themed tours from the Audubon Eco Cruise to the Gateway to America tour. Check the New York Water Taxi website for details.

Love those yellow boats

Water Taxi is one of the best things about summer. Taking the free ferry to Ikea for meatballs or the hop/on hop/off service to Water Taxi Beach are truly two of the great things about living in NYC.
