The New York City Downtown Boathouse is a nonprofit, volunteer operation that provides free kayaking on the Hudson River. The process is simple enough: Walk up on a weekend or holiday, sign a waiver, and a friendly paddling fanatic will outfit you with a life preserver and a one- or two-person “sit on top” kayak that’s nearly impossible to capsize. After a quick lesson on proper paddle form (and some free sunscreen), you'll be set loose in the spacious embayment to enjoy the river—which is considerably cleaner than you might expect.Extra
The Boathouse also runs free public programs on strokes and rescue maneuvers for land lovers who want to get their feet wet.
