Located in the basement level of the Olympic Tower, a serene public space off Rockefeller Plaza, the cozy Onassis Cultural Center is a gallery devoted to all things Greek, from paintings to sculpture to archaeological finds. Established by Aristotle Onassis’s estate, the foundation is named for the shipping juggernaut’s son who died tragically at the age of 25. And though these Hellenic-centric exhibitions only change once a year, the center hosts twice-yearly cultural events (like poetry readings, film screenings, or lectures), as well as rotating small-scale installations featuring contemporary art, architecture, and photography. Complimentary guided tours through the dimly lit space are available Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m. and are ideal for newbies to Hellenic culture, as the docents are scholars in these fields. But the gallery is small enough that navigating solo isn’t a problem.
