Though the name might imply otherwise, this Staten Island playland isn’t full of exotic animals or lightning-fast roller coasters. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a fun place to spend an afternoon. Bumper-car and go-kart tracks attract mostly kids from Staten Island, seeing as how Manhattan youngsters would need to take a ferry, the Staten Island Railroad, and then walk a few miles to get here. Meanwhile, at the wild-animal-themed mini golf course, sculptures of hippos, zebras, and elephants line the perimeter of the sixteen holes. The safari theme extends also to Himalaya, a tame roller coaster that reverses at the end and then repeats its trip backward. (All attractions here are pay-per-ride, so consider printing coupons off the park’s website.) A batting cage attracts Little Leaguers and beer-league weekend warriors alike, while the less athletically inclined can get their competitive juices flowing at the covered arcade, where games like a Marvel pinball machine rotate in and out on a regular basis.
