A 2007 makeover to the NYU hangout formerly known as Lion’s Den went beyond a name change, importing state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems and enlarging the stage. But while the improved tech specs are a boon to the largely anonymous jam, funk, and jazz bands that play here, the concertgoer was more or less forgotten: the bare white walls, a half-dozen teetering pub tables, and the department store racks pushed into a corner beneath a hand-written “coat check” sign create the appearance of a makeshift, downtown exhibition space. Oddly, the restrooms are spotless, granite-tiled, and attended. The drink prices, like many music venues, are maddeningly inflated, but it’s extra disappointing for a college-crowd bar. But, in Sullivan’s Hall defense, tickets rarely go for more than $20.
