Profile

This 68-story brass skyscraper stationed between Tiffany & Co. and the IBM building in midtown gained notoriety during the height of NBC’s hit The Apprentice. Viewers were granted access to both the corporate and residential realms of Donald Trump’s 1983 real-estate venture yet missed out on the building’s five-floor Art Deco–style shopping space. Inside, a towering atrium is graced by a wall of water and a five-story-high skylight, as well as a number of upscale vendors and glass cases full of garish, Trump-emblazoned merchandise while three eponymous restaurant options—the Trump Buffet, Trump Grille, and Trump Bar—are unsurprisingly Trumpian (read bloated). Before stepping through the building's brass revolving doors, be sure to stop on the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue and 56th Street to peer up at the structure’s cascading garden terraces and shimmering glass designed by Der Scutt of the Swanke, Hayden & Connell architecture firm. Even higher up, you can spy the tall windows of the 60th- through 68th-floor penthouse apartments. The luxury abodes’ occupants gobble up breathtaking panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the New York Harbor—a perspective which, if you’re fortunate enough to afford it, can make you feel like you’re on top of the world.
