Profile

This whitewashed, expansive space is run by the husband-and-wife team of David Nash and Lucy Mitchell-Innes, who both worked at Sotheby’s prior to opening a gallery on Madison Avenue in 1996. In 2005, the couple opened this bigger Chelsea location, which first underwent extensive renovations overseen by designer Bill Katz. With 1,800 square feet in its main space, Mitchell-Innes & Nash Chelsea is one of the largest galleries in the neighborhood. Fourteen-foot-high ceilings are covered in track lighting, but the space is also flooded with natural light, pouring through the glass wall in the front and the wall-to-wall skylight in the back. Exhibits are distinguished by a range of contemporary artists, both emerging and well established, and often present avant-garde works in the context of their predecessors. The gallery hosts both single-artist and group shows in all media, and shows typically change every five weeks. Though there is some crossover, the more intimate uptown space generally exhibits modern masters, compared to the more contemporary Chelsea program.
