Some New Yorkers relieve stress with a glass of wine or an invigorating run through Central Park. Others prefer to shoot at things. Since 1964, they’ve been doing so at Westside Rifle & Pistol Range, a full-service, purple-walled basement space in Flatiron that caters to everyone from novices to hobbyists to law enforcers. Newbies at Manhattan’s only shooting range must first consent to a criminal background check, then attend a short but thorough $65 class with a certified NRA instructor before being handed ammo, access to a .22 caliber semiautomatic rifle (which doesn't require a permit to be shot in New York), and range admission for three months, after which a refresher course is required. Advanced services include individual weapons-handling and marksmanship training, assistance with pistol applications, and a pro shop where members with a New York City or State firearms permit can purchase, clean, or repair personal artillery.
