Miami-inspired 12:31 will never be mistaken for a trendy South Beach bar. The postage-stamp sized outpost—which gets its name from its location, 12 E. 31st St.—is located in the lobby of the Hotel Chandler and true to its digs, the space exudes moderately priced hotel ambience without feeling overly generic. Color-coordinated lamps, light fixtures, and paintings prove more chic than you'd expect plus there’s a good selection of imported wines not often seen in bars of the same class. A mixed-age clientele of hotel guests sipping saccharine-laden cocktails fills the place generally. But the patrons' various foreign accents and the quiet atmosphere of the bar will make you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a subdued international scene which, as any nightlife devotee knows, is not such a bad thing. — Lucy Cohen
