Following several failed attempts at basement bars, Jacques has tried again with the 1534, named after the year of Cartier's first voyage. The cozy space succeeds in channeling the vibes of a colonial ship—if you replace the jaunty sailor tunes with Air remixes. The drink list is the real draw, with $12-$13 period-inspired cocktails, categorized by their respective French colonies: Americas, French Polynesia/Pacific, Africa, and Asia. Boasting contemporary and intriguing ingredients from egg whites to celery bitters, the spirits change seasonally and are strong enough to throw you overboard. The bar menu knows no geographic limitations and includes croque monsieur “sticks” as well as salt cod fritters.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
