With a soundtrack of thumping hip hop and industrial-chic décor, you might wonder why this place isn't called 17 Crib. Truth be told, there's nothing very homey about 17 Home, a conventionally stylish bar on a quiet Lower East Side block. Tall iron chairs sidle up to a copper-metallic bar, while angular brown leather sofas—looking somewhat the worse for wear—and low tables set the tone for the young, dressed-down crowd. Most of the patrons congregate in the low-lit front room where the DJ spins, but an airier, if less popular, alternative can be found in back: With floors, ceilings, booths and tables awash in white, this monochromatic adjunct feels like a set left over from Space Odyssey 2001—except for the slanting floor. Like that floor, the drinks are uneven throughout. The bar's regulars don't mind, though; no one's coming here to quibble over quality cocktails. On second thought, perhaps an un-crowded bar with bumping music and a few good friends really is a home away from home.
