If the area codes 646 or 347 ever become acceptable bar names, it's because this Euro-chic haven already snatched the iconic 212. Tucked in the ground floor of an UES brownstone, 212 has been serving the global set since 1999. In the afternoon, the leather stools fill with locals toting fresh loot from Bendel's or Barney's, while later hours attract a mostly 30s-something international crowd. The sleek bar top is lit with glowing tea lights and scattered with bowls of fancy chips speckled with hot pepper: perfect for inducing a thirst for one of the 100 vodkas showcased on the top of the bar. The décor blends a little Côte d'Azur with a lot of South Beach, and the drinks follow suit, from the lipstick-pink watermelon martinis to the tiki bar "212 for 2" concoction served in a pineapple shell with fresh coconut. And even though the pulse of remixed 90s pop songs isn't exactly cutting edge, it's still nice to find a little 305 in 212.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
