Patrick Baqueriz, a shaman by trade, opened this Astoria wine bar in 2009. Formally a deli, the airy, midsize space has plenty of seating: six stools at the wooden bar, a few brown couches in leather and suede, and a row of two-top tables in the front along a wall of windows. Fans suspend from the tin ceiling, art for sale adorns the burnt-red walls, and pink lights hang over the leopard-print candleholders on the bar. But it’s the menu that really impresses. Wines are divided between Asia, South America—mainly Argentinean and Chilean inclusions—and Europe, including varieties from Georgia, Belarus, and, if you must, Italy. All are offered by the glass, although bottles can be purchased upon request. In addition to a selection of beers, including the Cocoa Loco, a chocolate stout infused with espresso, there’s also a short list of appetizers, which Baqueriz prepares himself in the mini-kitchen behind the bar. Going for $12, the combo—a plate full of cheeses, spicy octopus, and olives and prosciutto—is more than enough for a party of two.
