Profile

With the opening of 675 Bar, the meatpacking has finally regained a neighborhood joint along the lines of the bygone Hog Pit. Steve Lewis is doubtful that the underground space will rake in as much as it did when it was turning bottles as Level V. But props to the bar for being conscientiously unpretentious, even if its nooks have been given PR-friendly names (the foosball area is the “wardrobe”; the area that contains Jenga, a pool table, and such is being called the “game room,” and there’s a “library” stocked with books from Housing Works), and even if mixologist Eben Klemm is latching onto the mescal trend by serving a cocktail (actually, they’re going with “mixed drinks”) called the Algerian Typist. You know what’s going to bring meatpackers to the place, aside from the cellar bachelor-pad vibe? Not so much the promised soundtrack of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jack White, and Solomon Burke (plus live acts in the future). No — it’ll be the prosciutto-wrapped “hot pockets.” And chocolate bacon on a stick.

A bar is as good as its bartender.

And our bartender was a bitchy nightmare. She saw us walk up to the bar, did not acknowledge us, and walked away to finish whatever she was doing with the olives or the mint or whatever else she could find to put off the inevitable of asking us what we wanted to drink. When she finally came back towards us I greeted her with a friendly "hello, how are you" to which I got no response. We dared to order our drinks despite the scowl on her face. For the remainder of the evening, she didn't ask us once if we wanted another drink, despite our prominently displayed empty glasses. She seemed more preoccupied with discussing boys and hair salons with the other bartenders than doing her job. There a are lot of great dive bars in New York that will treat you like crap for half the price.

really into this place

i have always felt that the bars that do the best here in the city usually have some sort of added bonus, theme or crazy reduced pitchers involved. but there has to be something for it to work and i think this placed nailed it, at least for me. 675 bar is the perfect combination of your parent's basement mixed with your bachelor friend's apartment. board games, pool tables, cozy nooks, cheap-ish beer, nice bites to eat. the only negative is that it's in meatpacking. that's all i can think of so far. will definitely return.
