85 West St.,
New York, NY 10006

Located in the financial district’s Marriot Hotel, this anonymous lounge is a welcome sight for be-suited business travelers too jet-lagged to cross the threshold of their hotel lobby to find a post-conference beer. The liquor shelf features the entire canon of mid-shelf poisons for mid-level management types, and the long bar is punctuated by wine glasses full of bar nuts. Mantled in wide-screen TVs permanently tuned to sports channels, 85 West smartly invites diners to focus on the latest hockey game rather than contemplate the monotonous décor of arty twigs in vases, blue-tiled walls, and abstract upholstery fabrics indigenous to all Marriotts. The dinner menu is devoted to burgers, soups, and salads, while the cocktail list is slightly more inspired: A quartet of $12 fruity mojitos includes an all-organic variety, and the signature “Dirty Blue” martini features blue-cheese-stuffed olives. Boddington’s is the lone iconoclasts among standard on-tap beers, while the wine list leans heavily on Napa Valley varieties. But even the weary guests who wander into this ho-hum hotel lounge after unpacking will see that 85 West is a pit stop—not a destination.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
