Located in an empty lot under the elevated JMZ tracks in Bushwick, 979 Brooklyn Backyard has ample space for shows produced by Todd P. and the like. A small cover is collected past the barbed-wire fence, and twenty- and thirtysomethings sit on a blanket of weeds and gravel to watch indie-rockers play up on the big makeshift wooden stage. The acoustics are great, with amplified sound from the speakers bouncing off the graffitied buildings that make up most of the perimeter of the circular space. Many bring in munchies from the bodega next door, but there’s also a grill on-site serving up burgers and dogs. A foldout table acts as the bar, with liquors, sodas, and beers served out of bulk-quantity boxes. Even with a couple of local vendors set up to promote their art wares, and band members’ vans parked in the back, there’s still plenty of open land to sprawl out under the sun.

All shows at 979 Broadway Backyard take place in the afternoon or early evening, as the venue has a curfew.
