Though this college-town joint changed management in 2009, it's stayed true to its roots: a no-frills bar for those who want little more than a beer with fried fare. Steps below MacDougal Street, the pub grub is served right at the bar, well into the night, or at one of the high-top tables strewn throughout the place. On the menu: everything from "overloaded" chili nachos to, well, fried jalapeños with sour cream. Okay, so it's not exactly chic, but 99 Below makes no apologies for itself, seeing as it's covered in flat-screens broadcasting sports and a loud radio playing pop music. The place happily caters to the NYU kids in the area: Come early enough and it's so slow you can bring your laptop, but come on a Saturday night and the crowds can get feisty. The beer selection (Bud Light by the bottle seems to be a favorite) is standard but plenty, and most of the shots—and the food offerings—are under ten dollars.
