This quaintly odd spot is attractive to Village Voice staffers for its after-work drinks, Cooper Union students for its single-digit prices, and neighborhood bohemians for its offbeat style (inlaid wood floors, a spacious outdoor garden, and the small, pubby bar). Gratis edamame arrives as you contemplate the snack-heavy, mostly Asian menu—with the odd exceptions of hummus and baba ganoush. But the food doesn't always turn out to be quite as interesting as the setting. Spring rolls stuffed with vegetables are oily and indelicate; a vegetable and tofu curry has fresh enough broccoli, cauliflower, and green beans, but the sauce lacks the expected aromatic spiciness. Negimaki, however, soft, charred beef wrapped around scallion and kissed with teriyaki sauce, is a fail-safe bite, as is the homemade strawberry shortcake. You have to experiment to find the gems—just keep in mind the place bills itself as a pub first. — Kathleen Squires
