Hidden amid subterranean delis where cabbies scarf Punjabi food to go is a narrow nook where neighborhood locals kick back on cushioned benches dotted with silk throw pillows. The walls have been papered in red and gold then accented by Moroccan lamps while a lone palm tree (all there’s room for in the narrow, low-ceilinged space) adds a touch of Marrakesh. Yet as the menu of hummus and eggplant salad indicates, the management is actually Egyptian; reggaeton and bangra videos push the diversity even further. Since the lounge is BYOB, you’ll need to bring hooch to mix into a variety of virgin drinks (e.g., mango juice, banana shakes or karkade—a tart Egyptian hibiscus tea). Teetotalers can catch a buzz from the hookahs with flavors ranging from the fruity (mango, orange, banana) to the totally fruity (Sex on the Beach).
