Glowing blue and green fixtures coolly light this sunken, mirror-paneled bar, where working- and middle-class Latino men go for drinks, sports and a game of pool. This isn’t the place they bring their wives or girlfriends, or where girls get together over margaritas—the only women in the room are the miniskirted bartenders, chatting in Spanish as they set down pints and mix serviceable drinks with canned juices. A few seats face the window onto 14th Street, and the rest extend along the bar to a sizeable, less populated back area with a pool table and a second, dormant bar that can open up to serve a party. Salsa, reggaeton, hip-hop and hits by Rosario, Marc Anthony and Los Lonely Boys soften the macho mood.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
