Given that the steamy Rated X party prompted a scolding from the dance police (and a rumored rift among the original six owners), Scenic didn't exactly clean up the reputation of the bi-level space that was once an after-hours club and then the scene of a murder. To improve chi flow, the remaining three principals ditched the panty party and the road-trip kitsch then replaced the roomy banquettes with semi-circular booths of turquoise pleather circa 1998. Although the layout remains the same (a lofted DJ booth near the bar; a few booths and couches with—shhhh—room enough to get your groove on in back), local art now graces candy-striped walls with a vintage pinball machine furthering the vaguely Coney Island motif. And even with original booker JC Scruggs consigned to this club’s history, Midway's upgraded sound system and light-boxed floor continue to make it a choice domain for rocking indie bands today as much as yesterday.
