Who better to open an easy-going jazz bar for his talented friends to flaunt their musical skills than a former pro skateboarder? An old-school deck and gnarly photos of owner Jaime Affoumado in action spiff up this decidedly laidback, skinny, little alcove, where, on a good night, the technical finesse displayed can be ferocious. The catch is that it never feels like a jazz club. Instead of cigarette stank, you smell fresh cut flowers. Instead of booze being meted out one shot at a time, cold saketinis and sangria spritzers are shaken to an Afro-Cuban beat. And instead of dark, dim-lit surroundings, high, white walls beckon. The eager crowd may be more NPR supporters than bop aficionados but if they don't know when to clap, Aff (who also drums) is happy to cue them.

Jam Sessions

Musicians may bring their instruments on Monday nights to jam with the proprietor.
