Where mermaids once swam behind the bar, a mural of tape decks by graffiti artist Ces now sets the tone. In their late-20s when they opened the club, Mike Satsky, Brian Gefter, and Barry Mullineaux didn’t run with Run DMC, but they’re out to evoke that era by planting old boom boxes and black and white photos of breakdancers in the VIP area—now open for all to eye, as is the DJ podium where socialite spinners like in-house DJ AM, Jus Ske, and the Ronson sibs mash up rock and rap. Bartenders whose shirts tout lyrics from both genres dole out fruity concoctions like the MC Cooler (pineapple, lime, and orange juices mixed with rum) to the narrow front area, which because of the palm trees running down the middle, gets packed faster than you can say “Yes yes y’all.” In the boxy back area, where padded walls enclose banquettes built for bottle-buying, the boyz in da designer hoodies watch women kick it old-school as best they can in high heels.
