Aside from a few pieces of Norse weaponry, the most telling sign that this is Valhalla—the fabled afterlife party for Viking warriors—is the ubiquity of beer. Thirty-three taps—with one handle fashioned to look like a skeleton; another, like a snowman—protrude from behind the light-wood bar like a row of forearms ready to wrestle. On the shelves behind, candles illuminate beer bottles with a reverence generally accorded to stained glass. Though a pair of flat-screens and a couple of spiffy ceiling fans resembling metal boat propellers suggest an effort to spruce things up, the tidy, light wood that predominates is decidedly not fancy: for instance, the picnic tables where reformed Bud guzzlers sample brews like Dead Guy Ale or uncork bottles of Deus. The latter, a Belgian champagne beer, is one of 45 available by the bottle.
ExtraWeekly beer specials showcase Valhalla's wide selection of funky brews.
