Downstairs from the Cajun-style Acme Bar & Grill, this modest rock club packs its roster with about five or six bands every night, showcasing a briskly paced lineup of young, unsigned artists, as well as a sprinkling of more prominent names. Red-painted brick walls, tables running along the sides and a tiny corner bar in back serving wee mixed drinks in plastic cups, provide most of the décor, while two hefty speakers by the stage make up the lo-tech sound system. The varied acts, ranging from alt-rock to post-punk to fusions of noise, pop and electronica, pull in a supportive, artfully styled crowd from downtown, uptown, Brooklyn and beyond. Everyone mingles together nicely, injecting the scene with an upbeat, flirtatious energy.
