There’s a homespun, kitschy rec-room feel about this thoroughly barricaded, sunshine-proof gay bar—perched atop a hill in an appropriately John Waters–y working-class neighborhood in Queens. Thrift-store sofas provide seating, and a seemingly handyman-erected stage stands tall on the back wall, hosting drag performances from Lauren Ordair karaoke on Wednesdays and Fridays. The beverage selection is a meat-and-potatoes mix of liquor and beer, but the clientele spans the gamut from gay, lesbian, bi, and curious to straight-up straight. And although the maple-leaf rainbow flag in the window suggests that even Canadians are welcome, this bar is practically in La Guardia south, so patrons are largely locals.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
