Profile
Perhaps the most Irish Irish bar in the city, An Beal Bocht is a popular homage to the Irish-American residents nearby and in Little Dublin a few blocks north. The small, high-ceilinged room is plastered with old photos and newspaper ads, mostly mementos of Emerald Isle history. Cans of baked beans and boxes of Weetabix line the shelves above the bar. A few nights a week, the tables are cleared away for live bands to perform folk or Irish tunes. — Shana Liebman

Not What It Used To Be

At one time one of the best bars in Riverdale, easily "Riverdale's Best Kept Secret". Excellent food and drink, a good calm atmosphere, and an all around laid back local joint. But such is no longer the case.
Recently, management has been changing direction with where the bar is headed and the clientle it wants to attract. They sitll constantly have great music (with the exception of their open mic night, which has ended despite their advertising), but stopping in for a pint to catch a few tunes with local musicians now gives the air that perhaps the bar has lost it's grasp on how to manage entertainment.
In summary, loads of changes recently have led many of the regulars to believe that the bar is quietly dispoising of it's Cheers'esque local style for a more money-driven establishment. It's truly a shame that this once fantastic hometown bar is now quickly on it's way to becoming just another expensive, fast paced, poor serviced New York City trend-bar.

Forget my previous review of this dump. I have to agree with the other poster here- this place has gone down hill.Since my last post this great quaint bar has become a college frat house with a dart board at the door, drunks insulting people and the manager laughing with them.
I brought a client for lunch there one day and when the waitress finally got around to taking our order and by the time she finally actually served us our food, it was time for my next appointment.
One weekday evening I went in and sat at the bar and ordered a drink. A few drunks started making jokes about my dreads. When I challenged them, they said they were only kidding, that its what Irish people do. The woman that identified herself as the manager was laughing with them and assured me they were joking -as if that mattered. One of the more civil customers told me that she wont be coming back either as the owner doesnt care about the place and has entrusted his bar into the hands of amatures. I wont go back again.
