When the four Brooklyn-bred friends and owners of Matchless in Greenpoint and Bar 4 on the Slope’s Seventh Avenue opened up Apartment 138 on Smith Street, they feared that the neighborhood was oversaturated. But in transforming this former ground-floor apartment into a day-and-night hangout, they’ve managed to draw in everyone from the sandwich-craving stroller-pushers to sangria-sipping singles. The aquatic-colored tile bar, chunky wood furniture, and bamboo-print wallpaper is just funky enough to fly. Downstairs, a mostly deserted (and garishly lit) rec room fails to inspire much gaming, though the backyard garden is a cozy find. Cheapies and chowhounds alike will delight in the seemingly endless something-for-everyone menu.
