Alphabet City's remarkable shift from the East Village's spillover area to one of downtown's hottest 'hoodz is embodied by this bi-level bistro. The restaurant area is warmly lit and laid out in such a way as to make for easy people-watching from almost every table. And in the summer, the floor-to-ceiling windows open and the tables spill out onto the sidewalk. The mood is more neo-grunge in the subterranean bar and lounge. — Charles Runnette
