Yes, another informal Irish pub for the Yorkville set, but one with a crazy streak. The yellow and ocher interior, the light smattering of candles, and the gut-high wooden counter rimming the room like a bumper are sensible enough. But then there's the wall mural of a banshee flying above a moonlit countryside, her red hair floating up and her mouth fixed in a silent scream. (It would be chilling if it didn’t look so much like somebody dropped Tori Amos out of a helicopter.) There's also a photo collage that crams a Ulysses-size load of creepy Eire miscellanea—Celtic tombstones, a "Leprechaun Crossing" sign, a red-haired version of that dead girl from The Ring—into a few manic square feet. Design oddities aside, Banshee plays it safe: guest-bartender Thursdays, pub-quiz Wednesday, a solid if unremarkable tap list, and a much-coveted Megatouch gaming system.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
