Located on the second level of the sprawling, modern Westin New York at Times Square Hotel, Bar 10 is the prototype of a hotel bar. The sparkling-clean space is cushy and cozy, with tan couches, lit candles, and checkered rugs throughout. With dark hardwood floors and large, looming mirrors, the décor is catalogue-model hip. Times Square tourists might mistake the bar’s ambience for actual sophistication, but theatergoers stopping in for a drink will still appreciate the spot’s warmth and its soundproof isolation from the midtown clamor. The bar staff treat all the imbibers like hotel guests, and there’s not a scruffy bartender or scantily clad cocktail waitress in sight. The drinks are similarly fancy clichés: $15 apple martinis and spiked lemonades that go down smoothly. Chic snacks like shrimp cocktail, assorted cheeses, and mozzarella salad are served at the bar, along with fried calamari, Angus burgers, and quesadillas. With its dim lighting and relative quiet, Bar 10’s a welcome reprieve from louder, nearby options—or a perfect, Lost in Translation–like hideaway to escape to during a family vacation.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
