Profile

On the surface, Bar Tano (which opened in the no-foodie’s-land between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens), bears more than a slight resemblance to its older sibling, Park Slope’s Bar Toto. They share an atmospheric old-world vibe, tin ceilings, and a long, inviting bar (zinc in this case, imported from Texas). But Bar Tano, according to partner Peter Sclafani (“Tano” was his grandfather’s nickname), is “more of a bar, with a lot more alcohol.” To wit: ten tap beers, 30 Italian wines by the glass, and house cocktails like a “dirty beet” martini. Tano’s menu is lighter and snackier, and runs the enoteca gamut from arancini to baccal bruschette and a Taleggio panino with fig jam and escarole. Expect also a few simple pastas, and a selection of grilled pizzas.

I've been in Bar Tano a couple of times during the day, once for coffee and another time for a business lunch and this place is great. I've had an excellent squash soup, salad and a pretty passable spaghetti with a bacon cream sauce that just needed an acid to be excellent. Atmosphere and decor are quite good as well and I've never had a problem with service. There might be better places if you're looking for a true destination restaurant. However, considering your other dining options on this side of Gowanus, this place should seem like entering the gates of heaven. I'm rating this a 10 to balance out that whiny 1 rating.
