To many gay men in search of a good time in the East Village, the Bar is a somewhat dingy afterthought. But that seems to be A-okay with this blessedly uncrowded dive bar's devoted regulars, who can be found circled around the pool table on any given night engaged in a spirited game. The Bar, owned by the same folks behind its faded next-door neighbor the Boiler Room, has the feeling of a real-life Cheers, where the bartenders really do know the mostly middle-aged customers' names and where newcomers (especially younger ones) feel welcome, not least because of a refreshingly low attitude level. And although the only nod to design here is an almost-artful series of glowing red spherical lamps hanging from the ceiling, the cheap drinks ($3.50 beers, $4.50 well) themselves constitute a kind of beauty (dollar-off happy hour is from 4 to 10 p.m. daily!).
