Profile

The East Village has more bars than Sing Sing, so any joint that's lasted over a decade must be doing something right. In the case of Bar on A (also known as BOA or Barona), the key to success has been its casual yet sexy atmosphere. Multiple ceiling fans and snakeskin barstools (honoring owner Bob Scarrano's live boa constrictors) lend a Southeast Asian feel, especially in hotter months while the beer selection extends beyond the usual to Schneider Weiss and Duvel (both served in chilled, label glasses). The bar menu is similarly diverse with shumai making an appearance as well as nachos. As to the crowd, they're mainly local, college-educated types ("No he didn’t go to Wesleyan, he went to Trinity") who aren't looking to get too crazy. Since annexing the café next door, Bar on A also hosts the occasional acoustic or rock act.

Extra

The kitchen serves up bar snacks from the Pacific Rim from 5 p.m.—midnight every night.

Cozy, comfortable, great music, and great people

I've been to Bar On A a lot and what seems to happen is that people drop by here because they were walking past it, and then call others to meet them after they discover it. As a corner bar, it gets some foot traffic and the people that come in stay in, and stay in for a while. Bar On A is a "locals" local bar, so it's East Village at its best, and has been for almost 15 years. The staff is friendly and treat you like an old high school buddy. The cozy red lighting and usually great music coming from the bartender's iPod or the DJs they have just add to an already fun mix.

lively but relaxed

The atmosphere at this place put me right at home from my first visit. I've come back here again and again with a wide range of people and it always seems to end up being a good night. The food is pretty good here, a small but varied menu. Fun bartenders too.
