Profile

Thirtysomethings making the move from bohemia into yuppiedom fill this chic French-Moroccan bistro, chatting about art openings and hot stocks over early-evening cocktails. Nonchalantly elegant, it's a place to go when you don't feel like dressing to impress but want something more refined than a beer at the corner pub. Crimson banquettes, a copper-topped bar, rickety wooden tables and specials printed in baroque gold type on wall mirrors create a retro-cool bistro vibe. Unfortunately, with such intimacy come close, cluttered quarters. During the night's peak hours, snagging a seat in the teeny bar area—or, better yet, a sidewalk table—becomes a maddening game of chance.

incredibly spotty and risky spot

some bartenders are awesome and others are appalling. funny thing is every time have had guests come and eat, especially the burger, they have complained of going home and feeling queasy and experiencing food poisoning. that would suggest avoid meat there. generally there are a few waiters and waitresses who are really good but the general crew is somewhat inbred, ill-educated and somewhat unaware who is paying their bills. the only saving grace is their male bartenders and one or two exceptionally charming and gracious waitresses. the food is mediocre and that is being kind, they almost never change the menu, their specials are the same for 3 months...well at least two, just a tired little place living off of some big spenders and mostly low income neighborhood types. once again, if it was not for some of the male bartenders, the place would have been buried long time ago, frankly, someone needs to take over, fire 75% of the staff and start again. they had a hardcore performance manager but he moved to run a sister restaurant in the lower east area, but more east village than further south.

Unlike any bar/restaurant in the city

I challenge you to produce a place with the atmosphere and food of Bar 6. it is both a neighborhood bar and a destination. The crowd is always respectful of each other (i.e., no non-sense), the food is great, the service is great, they serve Chimay, totally affordable.
