Pasties and chintz rule at this cabaret-style speakeasy. Burlesque dancers gyrate on a tiny stage in the center of the small, dim bar, illuminated by red lamps covered in black lace and shielded from gawking passersby by dark velvet curtains. A crimson, black-tasseled awning hangs over the bar, where two drink lists are served: “Class” has a grapefruit-and-bourbon Barrette cocktail and a spicy, tequila-laced Mariposa; cheap beer-and-shot combos are found under "Trash". Illustrations of peacock feathers arching over the windows and hanging lingerie blur the line between tease and sleaze. Barrette knows that it's more fun to embrace both than to pick sides.
Grilled CheeseThe grilled cheese foisted from the depths of a tiny oven beneath the bar is a buttery, challah-breaded godsend.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
