Despite its down-and-out moniker, Barfly doesn’t do much to shake up its prim Gramercy locale. It’s hard to imagine Charles Bukowski countenancing the hanging plants and potted ivy adorning the small outdoor seating area. Even the menu nods to healthy living, with a roasted veggie quesadilla augmenting the standard wings-n-burgers selection. At first glance, the pressed-tin ceiling looks authentically weathered, but a closer examination reveals recessed lights and security cameras tucked snugly into non-vintage metal. The interior is small, with a wooden bar, a pool table, and lots of seating. Twelve TVs ensure not a play is missed, with satellites helping to fill out the game schedule. A decent selection of wines and after-work apple-martini specials means the khaki crowd feels right at home, even if Henry Chinaski wouldn’t.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
