The German theme at this boisterous bar is as cartoonish as the dirndls and lederhosen clinging to the waitresses. Bierhaus sits on the second floor of one of Midtown’s busier stretches (Grand Central is steps away), guaranteeing that its large communal benches will always be filled with tucked-in office workers shouting over the live polka band. The taps pour only Hofbrau selections (the hefeweizen is recommended), which you can order in a stein or a two-liter boot. The hall itself is open and airy with a large projection screen on the wall, meaning you can watch anything from golf to soccer with an unimpeded view. When the weather’s nice, the wide balcony is equally busy with revelers sneaking a smoke, looking for reception on their Blackberrys, or taunting coworkers still waiting in line on the sidewalk below.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
