An acronym for Best In New York, BINY's name, like other things about this modest sushi restaurant-karaoke bar, suffers a touch in translation. With an entrance directly above a busy subway station, and a decorating scheme that pairs lime-green furniture with neon blue lighting then reflects it all via mirrored walls, the space is an authentically Asian mix of gritty and garish. (It could easily pass for a hostess bar if the staff were more pampering.) Drinks range from lychee martinis to premium sakes, and while the sushi is fine, BINY is ultimately all about stepping up to the mic. Irony's not big with this crowd; belting it out, as if Simon Cowell had dropped in for a California roll, is. Song picks veer from Top 40 to sugary Cantonese pop; if you're not ready for prime time, you can always retire to a private booth. But where's the fun in that? Tap into your inner Mariah Carey, pound another sake sour and embarrass yourself (and your friends) in the main dining room.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
