Considering the owners of this Bushwick space are filmmakers who found it while scouting locations, the cinematic qualities of Bizarre are unsurprising; the place conjures a David Lynch film. Ornate lamps and chandeliers bathe the massive room in a soft red light—this place is big, even for Bushwick standards. The walls are lined with Victorian couches and weathered mirrors; random mannequin parts and tiny skeletons serve as decoration. Indie and experimental films are projected on a bare brick wall opposite the large wood bar and a stage sits at the back of the room. An outdoor area with ample seating wraps around the back of the building into the lot next door. Bizarre’s aesthetic falls somewhere between ancient brothel and haunted great grandmother’s parlor. The drink menu is extensive and diverse, catering to both the cheap “shot and a beer crowd” and exotic specialty cocktail drinkers. On a slow night, sidle up at the bar or one of the many tables, but if there’s a party going on, performance art or live music¬¬—prepare for nudity, cross dressing and general madness.
