Profile

Though billed as a modern-day speakeasy, the most secretive thing about this lounge owned by the founder of the legendary Opaline is its basement-level location down a set of metal stairs. In two small rooms with corner banquettes, walls of exposed brick and stone lend further furtiveness. Leggy waitresses in revealing black dresses, heels and seamed stockings drift to cube tables wrapped in glinting pressed tin to deliver French and Italian charcuterie and artisanal cheeses, in addition to cocktails created by bar manager Charles Hardwick, a Pravda, Odeon, and Mercer Kitchen alumnus who leans heavily on sanctified ingredients like vermouth. His eponymous Blue Owl adds maraschino liquor and fresh lime juice to the classic gin martini to bitter, zingy effect. Although only private parties get to see it, the bar's true selling point is a narrow, bare-bones Cocktail Room that can be accessed separately through a courtyard: Private partiers can BYO iPod to override the nightly DJs and occasional world-beat acts.

Extra

The Cocktail Room is available for parties of up to 20 people. The open bar starts at $35 per person per hour. Call for further details.

Went here with bunch of friends on a Friday night and was disgusted. Its an over-hyped, over-crowded bar thats lost its charm and is infested w/ cocky & obnoxious young bankers who somehow want you to feel sorry for them (somehow they always find & ruin all the good places). Watered-down tired drinks... Dont waste your time. There are so many better, more authentic places in the EV.

Highly Unrecommended

I know a few people who've had large group reservations at Blue Owl so I tried it out for my birthday. After receiving an email confirmation on a reservation for 10 (2 weeks before arrival), my party and I got to the bar, only to be told that they had no idea who i was. The bartender said "well i guess i should check email more often". Um what??!! In addition to this he also said because he was unaware of the reservation, there was no table service. It gets better. After a round of drinks as we waited for a few last people, we were told that the kitchen was now closed - at 6:45PM! Absolutely terrible customer service so beware - this is not a spot for large groups! The only redeeming quality was the interesting mixed drink list. Luckily, this experience didn't ruin the night as I was able to find space for my party at a wine bar down the block. Again, approach Blue Owl with caution.
