Profile

The eateries that keep popping up along Smith Street got their first area bar when Boat finally arrived on the scene. Keeping in mind the neighborhood's influx of thirty- to fortysomething East Village refugees, the owners have managed to give the place a grungy feel but without actual grime. The ample tables and chairs are all thrift-store specials, but they're also all clean; the beer selection is extensive, but you can still get your favorite low-end brands; and the jukebox is terrific, though it doesn't have anything too new or progressive. Thanks to Boat's pleasant staff and working fireplace, the neighborhood's aging bohos, as well as the hipster newcomers, seem quite pleased that it dropped anchor where it did.

Best Jukebox EVER!

Fortunately, I did not have the same awful experience as some of the other reviewers. My bartender (male) was attentive and personable. However, the best feature at Boat was definitely the jukebox. Belle and Sebastian, Fugazi.. need I say more? I recommend checking it out. If you end up with a crappy bartender, at least you know the music will be awesome.

Notice how the photos show one customer there. Even the male bartenders have their moments not as much as the women. All probably need to find a new line of work. I'd be depressed too if I worked in a dive bar past 30. Despite their off-putting demeanor, they still have good drink specials. However, they've got to do something about the tudes, especially with the economy in the toilet. I would NEVER take someone there for business. NEVER. But for fun, it's pretty good.
