What's a pretty bar like Boogaloo doing in a place like this; i.e., just below street level on a side street of South Williamsburg’s gritty shopping strip? The lounge's ultra-mod decor (laptop-white plastic surfaces, recessed multicolor lighting, and low-slung banquettes) is assuredly cool but the vibe can heat up dramatically depending on whether DJs spin indie weirdness or hip-hop and whether scary art films or candy-colored cartoons get projected on the giant screen in the open back room. Longtime residents mingle easily with glamorously disheveled artists to the throb of the excellent sound system yet the delights of Boogaloo aren’t just aural. The array of signature rummy cocktails more than compensate for a less-than-stellar beer selection. Named after defunct movie theaters, drinks like the Commodore (organic guava juice) and the El Puente (passionfruit and lime) give respect to the hood and to your tastebuds.

DJs start their sets each night at 10pm, often accompanied by video art on the huge projection screen.
