Profile

Infamous Tammany Hall bigwig William Marcy “Boss” Tweed was quite the tawdry reveler back in his day, so it's sad to see his legacy imprinted on this pub where the lighting is a bit too bright and the entire Metallica oeuvre is on constant rotation. Sure, the Boss's top hat hangs behind the bar, and some photos of olde New York hang on the walls along with the occasional Bud promo posters, but this saloon is too fresh and shiny for its own good. The crowd, when it arrives, consists of rowdy birthday groups doing Jäger shots and straight-from-work young’ins taking advantage of the generous happy hours. They come to escape the surrounding LES scene: where else in the neighborhood can they play pool, throw darts, and smoke in a fenced-in back patio in relative privacy? Still, the ghost of Boss Tweed is turning over on his bar stool.

This is the best bar I have been in NYC, possibly the world Try striking up a conversation with the owner, Brian, and you'll find he's the friendliest barkeep you could hope for. Buy him a Jameson's and you'll get a sit on his Harley and a list of the best Italian restaurants in NYC (they're in Brooklyn and Coney Island by the way, and they're not called Lombardi's). Speak to the food and beverage director and you'll get up to the minute advice on the best draft beers. Boss Tweed's is not for whiney college types like the previous reviewer, it's for the discerning punter who wants a slice of the real NYC, and to spend a bit of time finding out that real New Yorkers are among the most hospitable people in the world. Thanks Brian, we'll be back soon as we can.

Racist, low-class dive

My friend got thrown out of this place during a party for being wrongly accused of sharing an open bottle of liquor in the bar. He doesn't drink and hadn't ordered a drink all night. He was, however, the only black person in the bar. Draw your own conclusions. On top of this, the place grossly overcharges for anything but the nasty tap beer, so if you're going to pay $40 for 4 shots, you can do that at a much nicer bar than this. There are far better places to spend your night than at this low-class, racist dive.
