The address may be uptown, but wild, ramshackle Brother Jimmy's is a down-home restaurant-bar that effuses North Carolina spirit. Part of a local chain of barbecue joints, this full-scale operation doubles as a sports bar with a front area boasting twenty-six TVs and a gigantic projection screen in the back. The whole place has the feel of a sloppy family reunion gone South: The music's loud, the huge booths beckon large groups, and the platters of food and cups of beer overflow onto the red-checkered plastic tablecloths. While the restaurant is surprisingly child-friendly—they feature a great kid's menu and the festive atmosphere is always on—the bar is more of an adults' playground, where shots with names like Smoky Mountain Slammer and Say a Prayer promise sure-fire inebriation. What's truly terrifying (or enormously appealing, depending on your perspective) is the Trash Can Punch, a two-and-a-half gallon crazy cocktail priced at an oddly reasonable $75.
