John McDonald, Josh Pickard and chef Josh Capon of Lure Fishbar are the engineers behind Burger & Barrel, a “winepub” with a bad case of nostalgia for Manhattan of the 1950s. The shuttered windows, dark wood décor, and the billiard-green accents all seem specially designed to complement cigar smoke and fedoras. Fifty years ago, the 30-something lawyers and bankers who dominate the crowd would have sported both. Because this is the 21st century, they wear plaid and sip on locally crafted “barrel” wines—on tap from Red Hook Winery)—and American beers like Anchor Steam. The rough-hewn wood-paneled walls are presumably meant to evoke the inside of a barrel; the result is a sedate feel, even on busy nights.
