John McDonald, Josh Pickard and chef Josh Capon of Lure Fishbar are the engineers behind Burger & Barrel, a “winepub” with a bad case of nostalgia for Manhattan of the 1950s. The shuttered windows, dark wood décor, and the billiard-green accents all seem specially designed to complement cigar smoke and fedoras. Fifty years ago, the 30-something lawyers and bankers who dominate the crowd would have sported both. Because this is the 21^st century, they wear plaid and sip on locally crafted “barrel” wines—on tap from Red Hook Winery)—and American beers like Anchor Steam. The rough-hewn wood-paneled walls are presumably meant to evoke the inside of a barrel; the result is a sedate feel, even on busy nights. — Aviva Shen
